New Thing #1 is to start a blog.
First off, I hate the word “blog”. It makes me think of the swamp thing. Remember that green, slimy creature from cartoons in the 80’s? I’m not sure why that image pops into my mind when I hear the word “blog”, but it does. I’m going to get over that and write one anyway.
Why am I writing a blog? I’m not entirely sure. One reason is that I need a way to chronicle my 30 new things. Another reason is that I want to work on my writing. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but I never actually sit down and write. This blog will be good practice for my writing skills and good practice at forcing myself to take the time to write. One of my biggest regrets in life is not taking up my college professor on his offer to help me get published as a business writer. I was a senior in college, about to jet off to Europe for a study-abroad program, and I had no desire to do extra work at the time. I wish I could go back and smack my past self in the back of the head and tell her to take advantage of his generous offer. A third reason I’m writing a blog is to finally finish something that I start…hopefully. One of my biggest flaws is that I’m constantly starting new things and leaving them only partly completed. This blog has a definite goal (30 New Things) and a definite end (November 18th, my 30th birthday), so I’m really going to strive to finish it completely. I’ve been talking about doing these 30 new things for a few months and have only recently started actually working on completing them. If I finish this, maybe the thrill of the accomplishment will motivate me to complete other tasks I set out to do in my life.
The idea of a blog seems a little self-indulgent to me. It seems kind of like people who talk just to hear themselves talk. But as long as the blog has a purpose or a direction, then I think they are a great resource for other people and a great catharsis for the writer. So I’m going to try to give my blog a purpose. Stated plainly, my purpose is to give other people ideas of new things to try and to hopefully get new ideas myself from people who read and comment on my blog. My list of 30 things is not complete yet, so I definitely need more ideas! So to anyone reading this, feel free to comment on anything I’ve written, share ideas of your own, share experiences of your own, or share this with anyone else you know who might be interested in reading it.
This blog has officially been started. Now I’ve checked one thing off my list. Woohoo! Only 29 more to go!
