Bacon and Oatmeal – sounds like breakfast, right? Wrong! It’s beer!!!! A friend of mine brews his own beer at home and is an amazing brewer (his last name actually happens to be Brewer, so I think it was his destiny)! I’ve never had a home-brewed beer before and I’ve never had bacon beer, so this was definitely a new experience for me! He was nice enough to let me try his special batch. He also let me in on how he made it. First, he soaked the bacon in maple syrup. After cooking the bacon, he soaked it again in brandy. The brandy is what he added to his home-made oatmeal stout. I’m typically not a huge fan of stouts, but this one was lighter than some others I’ve tried. And the bacon was very subtle; you could definitely taste it, but it was not overpowering. The process of beer making doesn’t seem too complicated, but it seems like it takes a bit of skill. I know a few other people who brew their own beer and have really liked the outcome. It might be something I want to try! If my beer turns out half as good as this bacon beer, then I’ll consider it good!
